University of Salford students nominated for Royal Television Society awards

From hard-hitting journalism investigating human trafficking to an underwater children’s TV show – a record number of University of Salford students and graduates have been shortlisted for prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) awards.

Eleven talented creatives from a range of arts and media courses including journalism, broadcast production, comedy and animation, are all nominees at the annual industry ceremony.

Journalism’s Aleksandra Todorova was recognised in the short feature category for her piece Human Trafficking: Getting Trapped. As part of her final year project, Aleksandra travelled to Bulgaria to speak to women forced into prostitution by traffickers and question police about what they were doing to combat the problem.

Martina Moscariello was also shortlisted in the news category for her Life In Europe piece, looking at the issue of the European migration crisis. Martina travelled to the Italian island of Lampedusa which has become a staging post for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean from North Africa to Europe, and spoke to people living in refugee camps.

Aleksandra and Martina both graduated with first class degrees from BA Journalism: Broadcast last summer and have since worked for ITN and 5 News.

Third year BA Journalism: Broadcast student Jennifer Smith was also nominated in the news category for her piece #MeToo Manchester in which she interviewed a rape victim who waived her right to anonymity to speak about the impact of the attack.

Harry Whitehead, a third year Television and Radio (BATAR) student, was also shortlisted in the short feature category for his drama Wanderlust.

Kate Troy, who graduated from BATAR last summer and now works for the BBC, was nominated in the comedy and entertainment category for her final year studio show, a nautical-themed children’s programme entitled Subventurers, along with fellow graduates Aneela Shakoor and Rebecca Scott.

Animation graduates Holly Petrie, Scott Tate, Mica Henry and Kieran Willoughby were shortlisted in the animation category for Little Seed, a short stop-motion film which was also Holly’s final year project.

The nominees will now attend an awards ceremony at The Lowry in Salford Quays on March 12.

Professor Allan Walker, Dean of the University of Salford’s School of Arts and Media, said: “All of our nominees are fantastic ambassadors for the University, showcasing some of the high quality work coming out of our many creative and digital programmes.

“We’re delighted to have seen so many nominations this year from across such a wide range of areas and we wish the best of luck to all of the talented students and graduates who have been shortlisted.”
